For fun seekers who thronged the Landmark Event Centre, Oniru, Lagos, venue of the 2015 edition of the Headies, which held on January 1, the event would go down in history as one of the most controversial music awards in Nigeria.
But beyond the dramatic war of words between two of Nigeria’s top musicians, Olamide Adedeji and hit-maker, Don Jazzy that almost ruined the well-attended event, it was indisputably another memorable outing for the organizers of the yearly event.
It is not only that the event lived up to its reputation, it also featured electrifying performances by the legendary Mashek Fashek, 2face Idibia, Vector, Reminisce,Timi Dakolo among others.
The sound, stage props and the atmosphere that pervaded the night were intense as comedian Bovi and popular choreographer, Kaffy who anchored the event thrilled the audience. Bovi gave the audience pleasurable moments of humour. His parody of D’banj and Denrele literally took the shine at the event. Just as Bovi, Kaffy was at his best, thrilling the audience with her animated opening dance steps.
But the night took a new twist when Olamide and his crew stormed the stage after YBNL act, Adekunle Gold was announced winner of the ‘Best Alternative Song of the Year’ award. While Adekunle Gold gave his acceptance speech, thanking God, and dedicated his award to his YBNL label and Lil Kesh, Olamide took the microphone from him, flipped the script, and went into a profanity-filled rant. He didn’t leave the stage until he smashed his glass drink cup on stage and threw his cap into the cheering crowd.
Events took another turn when Don Jazzy was ushered onto the stage to pick his ‘Special Recognition’ award for his contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s music industry. Don Jazzy dropped a bombshell hinting at a lengthy beef between the two music superpowers saying “Egbon Olamide, if you want the car come and collect it. God bless you.”
Victoria Kimani on fire!
Seductively beautiful Chocolate City singer, Victoria Kimani, was the first artiste to set the ball rolling. Her performance was full of energy and got the audience cheering. She rendered the song, Show with a sex appeal similar to that of Rihanna.
Eva’s shocking engagement proposal
While Victoria Kimani was performing on stage alongside rapper Eva, Eva’s boyfriend a TV presenter known as Caesar did the unexpected. Clad in a black suit, the suave dude walked up to her while the performance was ongoing, went on one knee and popped the big question: “Will you marry me? A bewildered Eva said yes! with a hot kiss.
Timi Dakolo’s dark moments exposed!
Timi Dakolo who clinched plaques in the Best Male Performance category as well as Best R&B Single and Recording of the Year, exposed a hidden part of him that stunned the audience. While picking the award for the Best R &B single, he revealed that a music director once told him that music wasn’t for him, advising that he should join the Drama Department of his Alma-mater. But the celebrated singer did not give up as he held on to his dream.
The rain maker, Mashek Fashek resurfaces!
Everyone was shocked when Nigerian reggae legend, Mashek Fashek mounted the stage to give an exhilarating performance of his evergreen song, “Send down the Rain.”
The brilliant music veteran held the audience spellbound with his delivery and coordinated dance steps. Everybody literally stood up, cheering and taking snapshots of this music general. The performance created a nostalgic feeling.
Vector’s moment of glory
There was a time Vector had legal issues with his former record label. This affected his music career in no small measure but at this year’s Headies, the King Kong sensation clinched the award for the Best Rap Single. He also had an amazing performance that transformed the hall into dance when he performed the song King Kong. Before mounting the stage, talking drummers played melodious rhythms welcoming him like a monarch. The audience couldn’t resist his stage presence, energy and the song’s instrumentation. While accepting his award, he said: “I have learnt to appreciate people beyond instagram likes”
Harrysong is undoubtedly one of the hit makers of 2015 .The Reggae blues singer delighted the audience with his five-minute free . The free was an infectious highlife which gave him the opportunity to share his grass-to-grace story in a melodious mode.
“Nine years ago, my step mother told me, ‘I will make sure you sleep and you won’t wake up. I will make sure you won’t succed.’ Just few days ago she sent me a message saying have mercy on me for what I have done to you.” The Five Star Music act also announced during his performance that he has become a brand ambassador for Gala, the sausage company.
The King of the night!
Soulful singer, Timi Dakolo had a threefold victory at the Headies 2015. Dressed in a casual black shirt on jeans, the ‘wish me well’ sensation clinched three awards in the Best Male Performance category and also Best RnB single and Recording Of the Year. In addition, he serenaded the audience with his acoustic rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption song alongside the gifted guitarist, Kunle Ayo.
2face represents the best of Nigeria- Senator Ben Bruce
Nigerian music star, 2face Idibia, was inducted into The Headies Hall of Fame at The Headies 2015. The award was presented by Ben Murray Bruce, a serving senator who eloquently narrated how 2face has contributed to the Nigerian entertainment industry. He puts it this way: “2face has paid the ultimate price for his success. He represents the best of Nigeria.”
Thereafter, the ambience changed when 2face delivered an electrifying performance of his pulsating tune, ‘Implication.’
…And Yemi Alade goes emotional on stage
One of the queens of the night, Yemi Alade, was adjudged The Headies Revelation of the Year. The beautiful musician was close to tears when she climbed the stage to receive the award.
“Forget the fact that I call myself King of Queens, I also have blood flowing through my veins. Last year, when I wasn’t able to win any award, it broke me down. I felt like nothing.”
She further recounted how she persuaded Ayo Animashaun on several occasions that she would love to perform at The Headies. Her countenance was that of someone who finally got what she has been longing for. Aside from the technical imperfections of the night, drama surrounding the win by Reekado Banks of the Next Rated award category, Olamide’s misbehavior and Don Jazzy’s reaction, it was a night indeed an epoch-making occasion.
